The inevitable is finally going to happen.
What started out as a set of eight premium bus services catering to HDB heartlanders going into the Orchard Road and Suntec City shopping districts, initially dwindled to just four, then three, and from next week, zero.
While the idea behind these routes was brilliant, what failed them was their very nature running as premium bus services. While the rides into town may be faster and more comfortable since seats are guaranteed, the fares (at $3.10 onwards) are simply too much for the typical HDB resident to part with. Especially so when the feeder bus-train combination is still very much cheaper even though slightly slower for some.
Should these routes be reclassified as basic-plus Express services, demand and patronage would definitely get an instant boost.
Services 578, 579 and 581 from Sengkang, Tampines/Simei and Punggol respectively, will be dong their final runs this Sunday 26 July 2009.
